Hungarian Beef
Pörkölt is a beloved Hungarian beef and onion stew packed with deep flavors and comforting richness. To make this authentic dish, start by sautéing 2 finely chopped onions in lard or oil until golden.
Add 2 teaspoons of Hungarian sweet paprika (the soul of the dish), stir quickly to avoid burning, and add bite-sized beef chunks (preferably chuck or shin).
Brown the meat, then add salt, pepper, 1 chopped tomato, and 1 sliced bell pepper. Pour in enough water or beef stock to just cover the meat. Cover and simmer on low heat for 1.5 to 2 hours, stirring occasionally, until the beef is tender and the sauce is thick.
Serve hot with nokedli (Hungarian dumplings), egg noodles, or crusty bread. This traditional Pörkölt is rich, savory, and a true taste of Hungary’s culinary heritage—simple, hearty, and absolutely unforgettable!
